Step 3: Obtaining ESRI Shape Files

For First Look Pro to function, you must obtain map data files that are either ESRI Shape Files or MrSid files. ESRI map layers are very common and can normally be acquired from the GIS Department of your city or county. You can also often obtain ESRI files from your Local Council of Governments or you can purchase them over the internet. The ESRI data will normally include a variety of files with the filename extensions of .dbf, .sbn, .sbx, .shp, .shx, and .xml.

Once you have the proper files, simply copy them to your computer. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the First Look Pro \Map_Layers folder, which by default is:

\Program Files\Cad Zone\First Look Pro 3\Map_Layers

Create a subfolder under the \Map_Layers folder that has the name to be used for your map data set. In this example, we created a folder called:

\Map_Layers\Beaverton

Copy all the ESRI files into this subfolder.
