Step 5: Set Up First Look Pro Map Designer

The separate Map Designer application lets you customize your ESRI map data to work with First Look Pro Map. You can add and delete map layers, change layer colors, line widths, and fill styles. You can control when layers are turned on.

After the installation, launch the First Look Pro Map Designer. You must run the Designer first, before you try  to view a map from First Look Pro.

Press Start, and you will be prompted to enter your Department Name.  If you don't know what it is, click Find to search for your flp_control.mdb file.

While setting up your Map Preferences you will be prompted to select a Map Layer Directory.  This is CRITICAL.  This is the folder on your computer which contains your .SHP files.  An example of such a file might be; arterials.shp.  .SHP or "Shape" file contain the geographic information which is used to construct a map.  Different files contain different information. You may have other files called; roads.shp, parcels.shp, parks.shp, airports.shp.  These files each contain a different set of geographic data about your region.  With First Look Pro Map Designer, you will be able to construct your map with exactly the geographic data that you wish to use for your district.

Click on the Default Drive first, then select your Map Layer Directory and click "OK".

In this example, the Map Layer Directory shows:

 C:\Program Files\CAD Zone\First Look Pro 3\Mapping Data

Next, you can select your other Map Preferences as well.  The Marker Type is the symbol which will be used to mark an address or Latitude/Longitude location. The Vehicle Type is for selecting which Vehicle Symbol will be displayed when the Map Designer is actively in use in a vehicle.

The Initial Zoom Value specifies how many miles (or kilometers) are initially displayed on the map. Enter a smaller value to have the map initially zoomed in closer.

After pressing SAVE, you will see the following screen, from which you can click the Start button to launch Map Designer.

Running "Verify Addresses"  obtains the  Latitude & Longitude coordinates for any Valid Addresses and inserts them into your First Look Pro database (Step 2, above) so the addresses can be located on the map. If you have run the "Verify Addresses" command (described above) then you should have some addresses listed at the right hand side of the screen.
